GRAMMYS: Kanye nearly stormed in on Beck’s acceptance speech

Do you remember in 2009 when Kanye West famously and quite disrespectfully interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs to defend Beyonce? Well the same thing nearly happened again last night at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

Beck won album of the year last night. First of all I was thinking who on earth is Beck? The nominees for this particular category were Beyonce, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith & Pharrell Williams. Some pretty big contenders. But my knowledge of the rock genre is limited and Beck is very respected in the industry and has been making music for over 20 years.

Beck was presented the award by the legend that is Prince and Kanye followed Beck to the stage and then quickly walked off. It seemed like Kanye was doing it as a laugh but later on when speaking to E! he said he wasn’t joking.

“Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé,” West said in an interview with E! after the ceremony. “At this point we tired of it because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats in music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.” He then continued to say “We aren’t playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ’Ye stepped on that stage“.

Ok Kanye.

Many people think Beck completely deserved the award. With Beck’s place in the music industry being so firm, if Kanye had actually gone ahead with it, he would have been grilled afterwards by rock fans and the press.

Check out the video below to see it.

I bet every artist dreads it if they win an award against Beyonce in case Kanye steps up on the stage!

You are right. I didn’t realise Beck was so big. I have now edited my blog to reflect that.
